What is the goal?

Outerknown, an e-commerce clothing brand, has dedicated the last decade to a commitment to sustainable innovation in the fashion space. They utilize special practices in their production process and earth friendly materials to drive their mission, “for people and planet”.

Currently, their site lacks any of this information, which is a missed opportunity to tell the brands story and mission to set them apart from other brands in this space.

As the UX Lead, I took our library of Factories, Mills and Materials and created a digestible and informative experience for our users, allowing them a space to learn about the practices that make Outerknown a sustainable company.

Impact

By creating this informative space, our customers will learn about our process, trust our values as a company, and understand our higher price points, leaving them satisfied with supporting our company.

Objective

To increase brand awareness and loyalty by identifying points of frustration and interest that users experience when navigating sustainable information.

Finding the winner

When visiting other sites’ sustainable journeys, there was so much text and info cluttering up the experience. So, during my wire-framing and iterating, I had a high focus on making the information as concise as possible.

Finding the right layout for both mobile and desktop platforms involves careful consideration of design elements that enhance user experience. On mobile, simplicity and clarity are paramount. In contrast, desktop layouts can embrace complexity, utilizing larger screens to present more information and interactivity. Balancing these needs was crucial to ensure that this experience truly shines across all devices, effectively engaging users and allowing content to be easily consumed regardless of the platform.

Is it usable?

I performed 2 rounds of usability testing with the task of searching for and learning about a material and a facility and here’s the feedback we received:

  • 100% of users the experience to be visually appealing, informative, digestible and fun.

  • 80% claimed it caused intrigue in our products, a justification for a higher price point and created trust towards the brand.

  • 90% of users enjoyed the map feature, but felt it lacked information and intractability.

Final Product

Creating a detailed and comprehensive prototype aided me in articulating my design choices and all it’s moving parts to everyone involved in the project. This process ensured that we all had a mutual understanding of the objectives and requirements before I handed it over to the developers for the crucial stages of building and launching the final product.

What do you think?

This page build was quite a beast, but I had an incredible time building the foundation of how Outerknown tells their story. I would love to hear your thoughts about this project!
